Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Frank on March 29, 2026:

I was deeply saddened by the coincidence of losing Dave Kuhn and Bob Doughty in a matter of days. But I was reminded of their deep connection in working to bring about the Arvin Gym. Dave put so much into getting the initiative approved and underway, and Bob led in the design and approval process. Both efforts were almost herculean, and neither Dave nor Bob spared any effort to overcome the obstacles before them. The Class is forever grateful that their efforts leave a lasting testament to our First Captain and the example of leadership and physical fitness he embodied. Along with the Arvin Alcove, future members of the Corps are able to be inspired by Bob Arvin's example as a cadet and as an Army officer.

A not so quick anecdote. Mary and I were in Las Vegas for the mini-reunion arranged by Skip and Marilyn O'Donnell. Part of the schedule included a golf outing. So, John Seymour and Dave Kuhn came up from Southern California to partake in the fun. At the end of the round, Dave asked my opinion on the GPS system on the golf carts. I gave him my honest view of the shortcomings of the system, forgetting that these were the early days of such devices. When Dave looked hurt by my comments, I asked why he seemed that way. He then informed me that the system on the carts was a product of John and his, and he hoped for a more favorable review. At that point, I was speechless, then apologetic. But in typical Dave Kuhn fashion, he regrouped and sincerely thanked me for my "helpful" remarks. His gracious demeanor thereafter was so typical of Dave, and captured his essence.

Dave's passing is a great loss to the Class, but the memory of his leadership and friendship will endure to the last. Truly Dave, Be Thou At Peace!
