Be Thou At Peace

While we were assigned to different cadet regiments so that we didn't go to any classes together, after graduation we became best friends during training and schools at Ft Benning. Matt was the BEST MAN in my wedding on Memorial Day, 30 May 1970 at West Point. The other classmates who were ushers at my wedding included Bill Pahissa (the first of our class to be KIA in Vietnam), Dick Anshus (my apartment roommate at Ft Bragg and a POW in Vietnam) plus Phil Clark. In Vietnam, Matt served with Special Forces as deputy to MOH recipient BOB HOWARD. Matt extended his time in Vietnam for a second tour just so he could continue to serve with and learn from BOB HOWARD. In every respect, Matt was a dedicated, exceptional leader of Special Operations soldiers. He was also one of the kindest, big-hearted, compassionate and generous men that I had the pleasure of knowing. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his lovely wife and two beautiful daughters. I will forever remember Matt with sincere fondness and miss him terribly. |
