George E. Lonsberry, 88, of Morristown, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 15,1937, in Willows, California, George's life was defined by service, faith, leadership, and an unwavering devotion to his family. Raised by his beloved grandparents, Paul and Stella Lonsberry, in Eolia, Missouri, George developed the values of integrity, discipline, and compassion that guided him throughout his life. He was the son of Grace Marie Soeth and Russell Lonsberry. George attended Clopton High School in Missouri before graduating from Glenn County High School in Willows, California, in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Air Force before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1959. As a member of the West Point Glee Club George sang at the Rockefeller Tree Lighting, Ed Sullivan Show, Bell Telephone Hour, Hollywood Bowl as well as marching in President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Parade. After graduating from West Point in 1964, George served as an officer in the United States Air Force, in the Philippines, Japan, Nevada, Texas, Virginia, and Tennessee. During his time at Clark Air Base in the Philippines, he was involved in overseeing logistics supporting military operations during the Vietnam era. On February 18,1966, George married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hanks. Together with four wonderful sons, they built a loving home rooted in faith, service, and unconditional love. Following his military career, George dedicated 34 years to Chubb & Son Insurance Company. He later served as President of the Chubb Quarter Century Club, continuing his commitment to those he worked alongside throughout his career. A man of deep Christian faith, George was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown, NJ where he faithfully served as both a lay reader and usher. He also served as Senior Warden at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Providence, reflecting his lifelong dedication to serving both his church and community. George was a proud member of the Military Officer's Association of America (MOAA). He will be remembered for his quiet strength, humility, unwavering integrity, and gentle kindness. He lived by the West Point code of Duty, Honor, and Country. His life was a testament to honor, service, and love. George is survived by his devoted wife, Betsy, their sons Christopher (pre-deceased), Carter (Christine), Hunter (Tong), and Gardner as well as grandsons Devin, Cody, Rex and Lance. The funeral will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 70 Maple Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960, on Saturday June 27, 2026, 9:30am with a private burial following immediately at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NYC. The service will be live-streamed Saturday 9:30 am from St. Peter's Episcopal Church https://vimeo.com/event/6012294. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to Columbia University Irving Medical Center to support research in Brain Tumors and Parkinson's disease.
