Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG RM Ong (Ret) on July 16, 2026:

I knew George only as a classmate. But I remember him well as a friend. He always had a smile, a wave or a friendly chat for me.

We belonged to different Regiments, and our barracks were far from each other, but somehow, we were able to meet and exchange pleasantries' quite often. He was quiet by nature but would open up to his close friends.

George was a superb athlete, who contributed much to Army's victories. He possessed a slim, wiry physique, but was a great distance runner for Cross-country and Track meets.

We parted ways after Graduation Day on 5 June 1963 -- and our paths never crossed again. He served his country full-time, just like I served mine.

Be thou at peace, my friend! And now, my final, farewell salute!
