Edward Robert Hilton was born on September 5, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Margaret and Edward. He served in the USAF after graduation last assigned in England. He resigned his commission in 1954 in England where he married and stayed the rest of his life. He had two sons and one daughter with Barbara Morvyn Tracey. He died on May 12, 2007, in Wallingford, Berkshire, England, at the age of 79.

Edward Robert Hilton III was a graduate of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, graduating with the Class of 1949.

He is officially recorded in the Congressional Record and academy registers as Edward Robert Hilton III.

Upon graduating in 1949, he was nominated and appointed as a second lieutenant, subsequently serving in the military. By the early 1950s, presidential nomination records list him among officers in the regular service components (such as the U.S. Air Force).
