Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Judith Brundin on April 5, 2006:

This is my father. Never was there a greater human being, never could there have been a greater father to love. He was so caring and such an intelligent person. He loved to dance and I with him, we kept beautiful time. He was the second generation Swede, his father Nathan (d. 1957 in MN) was the first to immigrate from Sweden in 1916 through Ellis Island. He tried so hard to help others, he was such a loving Christian-Lutheran man. He could never get over the strange deaths of his own Swedish family. No one seemed to die naturally. He was right. He said over and over that "if you are in the military, it is a given you will be experimented upon." Yep. That statement I believe and it is probably why he left the AF service after 26 yrs (he was a 1944 grad of West Pointe). He was also the command post of the Mercury Astronaut Program, and known to both JFK & RFK...men he loved and adored. I won't forget how Dad took my sis and I to an outdoor parking lot in Torrance, CA, on a sunny hot afternoon in the summer of 1960, the area was packed with people, to hear JFK's address to a large crowd. Dad just loved him, this was a big moment for all of us, I recall seeing JFK on that platform, elevated above the crowd. How small he looked above, but how big my father's pride was of him, how he silently wanted us to get it. Without saying what it meant, Dad used to throw us these moments...he never used to overemphasize, he just hoped we would understand how impt it was to him, us. Usually we sat there...did our best. He should not have died in 1994. A lot of AF people need to consider escaping this 1920s-pres mess. I wish that I had tried to get him out of this...I probably will never get over his death as I still believe it was unecessary. I miss him so much still.

Forever, a greatest love...Judith Brundin
