Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Curtis Davis on April 15, 2006:

You really don't know how profound an effect people can have on your life, without even knowing it. Mike Leonard and I were room mates in K-2 our plebe year. We attended the Syracuse football game in NY City in the fall of 1960. We won, which is probably irrelevant.

Mike asked me what my plans were for that evening. I replied that I had none. He called his Father, and then Brigadier General Leonard invited me to join him, his wife, and Mike for dinner, then the Broadway Theater performance of The Sound of Music. We had excellent balcony seats, and I'll never forget the opening of that play. The orchestra had finished the overture, the curtains opened, and a mountain moved from the back of the stage to the front, with the star Maria singing "The hills are alive with the sound of Music..." It was absolutely magical, and I've had a love affair with live theater ever since.

I thanked Mike's parents for a wonderful evening. But I don't think they comprehended what an impact it had had on me. MG Leonard, thank you from the bottom of my heart for introducing me to live theater.

Grip hands, though it be from the shadows.

Be thou at peace.

Curtis
