Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Porter, '54 on June 6, 2006:

Bob and I were friends from our youth in Galesburg, IL. Our fathers were both on the Knox College faculty, his as the football coach and mine as the Professor of Military Science and Tactics in the department where Bob would also serve early in his career. We were both in the youth group and the Boy Scout troop at the Presbyterian Church, and Bob was our first Eagle Scout. Following my dad's transfer from Galesburg in late 1946, I didn't see Bob again until my arrival at West Point 3 1/2 years later. After running my chin in, with smiles on both of our faces, he recognized me, and we saw each other periodically over the next two years. Throughout the years that followed, I periodically read about Bob in Assembly and in the Register of Graduates but we never crossed paths again.

I was saddened to learn of Bob's untimely passing, but I will always remember him as a great guy with a big smile and a cheerful disposition. My condolences to Carol and their children. Along with Bob's many other friends and acquaintances, I share your loss.
