As a cadet in 1964, I recall General Davison's remarks in the Mess Hall before the Navy game. He recounted one of the battles during the War of 1812 where the British Commander commented on the grey uniformed Americans - "Those are Regulars, by God!" - referring to their discipline and order. General Davison finished with a rousing "Now WE are Regulars, by God, so let's get out there and BEAT NAVY!". Even at that time in my young life, I recall thinking that this man was something special, a real leader and motivator. As it turned out, we did beat Navy that year in spite of considerable doubt from the Sports Press at the time. This must have made for a tough year for Roger Staubach but a good year for us as plebes as well as the rest of the Corps of Cadets. I think the country has been blessed to have been served by him. |
