Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Klubertanz on September 20, 2006:

It's been over a year now since Vinny's passing, and I'm just now getting comfortable enough to write this eulogy. There was no other person that I knew through my West Point and Army days that had more of an impact on me than Vinny. The first thing anybody ever noticed about him were those big freakin shoulders; the second thing was his heart.

He used to tell stories about helping out local families during high school by buying them the bags of groceries that they couldn't get for themselves. He loved tipping the grocery baggers at the Commissary. He loved teaching people one of his amateur card tricks. He'd talk your ear off all day long about Jen, his perfect match. Then he'd go to the gym and throw around 420 pounds like they were matchsticks.

The difficult part about losing Vinny is that he made it through all the hard times. He made it back from Bosnia and Iraq, they were nothing. I can't believe that such a good man, such a powerful man, can be taken out by something so small as cancer cells. Vinny, you were much too strong for a little thing like leukemia to erase our memories of you. You will always be a vital part of the lives of all who knew you. You are a great man and you are missed. Thank you for spreading your message, and I'll see you someday.
