Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Mike Trollinger on December 16, 1999:
Harry,
I was shocked to see your obituary in the Assembly. It brought back memories of those days that we shared in Korea in 1973-1974 in the 227th Maintenance Battalion, there on the Han River in Seoul (actually Hannam-dong).
Those were hard days for me, Harry. I was having a lot of internal conflict about my days in the Army, and you helped me! We didn't always agree on things, in fact, we fought over some things. But that still didn't keep you from trying to help me. For that I am eternally grateful!
I still remember the day that you sat me down in your office. You were a Major and the Company Commander of the 595th Maintenance Company. I was a Captain and the Adjutant/Headquarters Company Commander for the battalion. My personal problems were overwhelming me at that time, and I was questioning my commitment to the Army. You told me that "life is like a marathon, not a sprint. You have to be consistent over the long race, not just the short haul." You probably didn't think I was listening, but I was.
As the Lord would have it and with His help, Harry, I have gotten my life in some semblance of order and have had some moderate achievements since those days. When I counsel/advise others around me these days (including my own kids), I use your words. I don't tell them who they're from. They wouldn't understand, nor would they care. But your legacy is carrying on with me and with them.
I am in this thing for the duration.
Thanks, Harry
