I met Phil at Fort Bragg when he was on his summer training from West Point, and my father was teaching at the First Army Area Intelligence School. We dated the whole time I was there (not very long), and I was struck by his sense of his own mortality. I never forgot this, because both of us were so terribly young, and it was truly heartbreaking. He told lovely, funny stories of his family and growing up in Shamrock. He was a gentle, sensitive soul, and I have always been grateful to have known him. |
