Be Thou At Peace

Posted by ann johansmeyer on October 30, 2006:

To Amos's family:

We are so sorry to hear of your terrible loss. Recently I read what the writer Carlos Fuentes replied when asked how he could cope after the unexpected deaths of both of his children, and it occurred to me that what he said was truthful and wise. And so -- sadly lacking anything else to give to you other than our profound sympathy -- I will reproduce those words below:

Interviewer: ?How do you get up in the morning after that kind of loss??
Fuentes: You go on. You go on. You bring the person you love inside you. That is how you cope. You make him or her live within you. The whole experience I had with my children is in me. It is nowhere else I can see. I can see a photograph, I can feel sad, I can read a poem, but the experience of having them within myself is what matters.

May you find some peace and comfort in memories of your wonderful son.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Omar Gutierrez and Ann Johansmeyer
parents of Capt Soren Gutierrez, Ramadi, Iraq
