Be Thou At Peace

Posted by LTC Bill Acheson on November 20, 2006:

I had the honor of knowing Ryan briefly while he was assigned to one of my Plebe math sections. There are those who quickly distinguish themselves as something special - even amidst a distinguished peerage. Ryan was one of those who stood out. He presented a unique combination of intelligence, a willingness to ask questions, and a good sense of humor; an instructors dream.

I just reread Gen. Douglas MacArthur's speech to the Corps of Cadets as I thought about Ryan's death. Duty, Honor, Country - three simple words, yet often such a challenge to live. From what I knew of him, and from what I've read, Ryan appears to have lived those concepts and served the people of our great nation.

Ryan, be thou at peace. 300 million Americans owe you and your family a great debt. It will be an honor when that inevitable day comes that I can again stand beside you and others of the Long Grey Line that we remember here.

"Always for them: Duty, Honor, Country. Always their blood, and sweat, and tears, as we sought the way and the light and the truth."
