Robert Kimball Mercado

West Point, 1960

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brig. Gen. Ramon M. Ong (Ret) on November 21, 2006:

Cadet Mercado was the first upperclassman to befriend me during Plebe Year. He stopped to ask me a question in Spanish, and I replied in kind. He gave a genuine smile, then shook my hand and welcomed me to West Point and said that I should visit him anytime if I needed any help. He seemed to have a special place in his heart for Hispanic Cadets.

Robert and I belonged to different Cadet Companies, so our paths crossed rarely during my first year which was his last year. Somehow, I never encountered any problems that merited a special visit to his room. I do remember meeting him after Recognition Day - he congratulated me for surviving Plebe Year. Our final words to each other were, "Adios, amigo."

I never saw him again. Now it is my sad honor to say to him for the last time, "Adios, amigo!"
