Be Thou At Peace

I was Brian's company commander at 1-68 Armor at Ft. Carson. Not only was he a good man and a great friend, he was an outstanding officer. In one battle we were fighting at the National Training Center, the whole company was "killed" except for Brian's tank. He took the objective alone, and then continued to fight deep into the OPFORs rear areas. He not only won the battle for the company, he was named "Hero of the Battle" by the OCs. Because of Brian's professionalism, we didn't spend all of our time at Ft. Carson working- we had so many laughs they can't be counted. I remember my command there at Carson as the highlight of my ongoing career because of the bond I had with Brian and the other officers in the company. After we parted ways, I kept track of him and was not suprised that he was training for the Olympics. Brian was one of the very few people you meet that can literally do anything they put their mind to. When I heard he left the Army I was relieved, because I knew he had big plans and could do some great things- he often expressed an interest in politics. Another testiment to his character is that he went to Iraq when he was called. His sense of honor and commitment to his fellow soldiers is what drove his decision to go when he could have found a way out, like so many others. I know in our Army I am not alone in my deep sadness at his passing. My heart broke when I heard the news. It broke for his family and it broke for the loss of such a good, kind-hearted man who had so much left to give to all of us. God bless you, Brian. I miss you. MAJ Tony Nichols
