Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kyle Hatzinger on January 25, 2007:

"It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out where the strong man stumbled, or where a doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man in the arena whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, and who comes up short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause. The man who at best knows the triumph of high achievement and who at worst, if he fails, fails while daring greatly..." Theodore Roosevelt

I met Jake when I was fortunate enough to be put into Company A-1 as a Plebe in 2002. I didn't get to know Jake really well until second semester until he was the only Yuk and I was the only Plebe attending platoon PT after school. He took me under his wing and became my other Team Leader. He was never short on jokes or observations about West Point that taught me not to take the place or myself too seriously. I lucked out to have Jake as my platoon sergeant 2nd detail of Buckner. Countless times he showed the man and future officer he was.

Again, he has shown the man he was by laying down his life so a country and a people may be free. Maybe solace can be found in knowing that.

Jake we will keep up the fight so your death will not be in vain. Rest in Peace and we'll see you on the high ground.

Hatz
