Be Thou At Peace
Posted by CPT Laura Weimer '03 on January 29, 2007:
For my last two years at West Point, as part of the West Point Glee Club with Jake, one of our signature songs was "Mansions of the Lord," that played in the closing credits of the movie "We Were Soldiers." We sang this song quietly at the Vietnam Memorial, at concerts, etc. I always thought of these words applicable to our former Wars' Veterans who gave their lives. I had never applied these words to a friend, someone I knew so closely. But as I reflected and thought of him this weekend, their meaning fits perfectly for Jake. He knew these words as well as I do, singing with a sense of pride in our Army's history in our voices.
To fallen Soldiers, let us sing Where no rockets fly, nor bullets wing Our broken brothers, let us bring To the Mansions of the Lord. No more bleeding, no more fight No prayers pleading through the night Just divine embrace, eternal light In the Mansions of the Lord. Where no mothers cry and no children weep We will stand and guard, though the angels sleep All through the ages, safely keep The Mansions of the Lord.
I know you'll be one of those angels singing in Heaven, just as you were on Earth. Though we are saddened by your departure from this Earth, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him." (Romans 8:28) So we will carry on and know that you are at peace and in God's hands, as are we. Well done, my friend. Be thou at Peace.
