Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Cavender on January 30, 2007:

Bill Train and I were two of 7 Lieutenants in the first Military Assistance Training Advisory (MATA)Course. There were 300 officers & NCOs in that course and we all deployed to Vietnam in March 1962. This was the beginning of assigning advisors to Battalion level in the Vietnam army. My initial assignment was in Saigon. Bill would come to town on the weekend and bunk in my quarters. He was always the fun guy - He would play his harmonica and the Vietnamese kids would follow him around like the pied piper. He was a great friend and I certainly was shocked to learn of his death, along with Capt McCarthy, in an ambush.
