THOMAS JONES DIES AT 70; DECORATED ARMY OFFICER
Thomas Tytherleigh Jones,70, an Annandale resident who was a retired Army colonel and a former resource staff manager of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, died July 8 at the Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va. He had Alzheimer's disease.
Col. Jones , an Illinois native, served in the Army during World War II and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1948. Shortly after graduation he was sent to Japan.
He was sent to South Korea shortly after its invasion by North Korea. He found himself at the embattled Pusan perimeter, where American forces were making a bloody stand against the communist onslaught. A combat engineer with the 1st Cavalry Division, he was captured in the fall of 1950. After being forced to march 200 miles, even though suffering from wounds and disease, he and three other soldiers escaped.
After Korea, Col. Jones assignments included tours as an instructor in the military art and engineering department at West Point and the command of a combat engineer battalion. He wrote speeches for Army general Harold Johnson and Creighton Abrams. He was serving on the staff of the Army chief of staff when he retired from active duty in 1970. He then worked for the Federal Reserve Board until retiring a second time for health reasons in 1984.
In addition to West Point, he was a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College and the National War College and received a master's degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His military awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star with combat "V" for valor, the Legion of Merit and two Army Commendation medals.
Col. Jones was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Annandale.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, the former Jerene Garges, of Annandale; three sons, Thomas Jr. of Prudhoe Bay,Alaska, Andrew G., of Lovettsville, Va., and J. Christopher Jones of Herndon; a daughter, Cameron J. Kauffman of Springfield; a brother, William H., of Richmond, Ind.; two sisters, Isabel Simmons of Yakima, Wash., and Marion Pike of Barrington, Ill.; nine grandchildren;and a great-grandchild.
