Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mona Hassen on March 24, 2007:

I knew Leif for 4 brief, yet memorable, days in a Model US Senate conference in Germany when I was 17 years old in 1996. Our school only sent a small group to the conference..we were the rookies and everyone else was so experienced compared to us. We were terribly intimidated. I met Leif on our 2nd day there. I was having a terrible day and he made me laugh so hard I completely forgot what I was upset about. We became great friends instantly. He was smart, funny and so eager to hear other people's points of view. We stayed in touch for a year and then went our separate ways. For some reason I remembered Leif 2 days ago and I googled his name, not thinking for a second I would find what I did. I haven't been in touch with Leif for over 9 years but the news struck me as though I had known him my whole life. I can't believe he died. My heart and prayers are with his family. Your son was a ray of light.
I hope the leaders of this country think long and hard before they send their boys to war. Leif was always willing to give his life for this country, that doesn't mean that he had to. I hope you rest in peace Leif, we miss you.
