THOMAS WILLARD BOWEN DIES; STOCKBROKER, BRIGADIER GENERAL
Thomas Willard Bowen, 67, a stockbroker for Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. and a retired Army brigadier general died Friday ( March 25, 1994) in Buffalo General Hospital after a 2 1/2 week illness.
Born in Hastings, Neb., Bowen grew up in Arkansas and was appointed to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point by Sen. William Fullbright. He graduated with honors in the Class of 1948.
He later graduated from Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.
He received a master's degee in psychology from Vanderbilt University before taking a teaching assignment at West Point.
Bowen's military career included 12 years in Europe and five years in Vietnam.
His major military assignments included chief of staff and brigade commander of the 4th Armored Division, chief of staff of V Corps in Germany, commanding general of the U.S. Advisory Group for I Corps in Vietnam, chief of intelligence for the U.S. Army in Europe, deputy commanding general at Fort Polk, La., with the 5th Infantry Division, and chief of staff of the 6th U.S. Army at the Presidio, San Francisco.
He retired from the Army as a brigadier general in 1978 and became the executive vice president of Grex, a real estate conglomerate in Lake Charles La., where he retired in 1981.
He then became the executive vice president of Actuarial Assocites of America, holding that position until 1983 when he became group vice president of Goldome Bank for Savings in Buffalo.
In September 1986, he became the president and chief operating officer of Buffalo Truck Sales and Service. He later joined Dean Witter Reynolds in 1990.
He served on the boards of Shea's Buffalo Theater, the Private Industry Council, Kenmore Mercy Hospital Foundation, and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society and the Council for the Boy Scouts of America.
He also served on the City of Buffalo Parking Board and was a Daemen College trustee.
He was a member of the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce and the Buffalo Club.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1029 Delaware Ave.. Burial will be Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Surviving are his wife, the former Maureen Williams; a daughter, Jan Kisela of Philadelphia; a son, Thomas of Baltimore; his mother, Margaret Bowen of Fayetteville, Ark.; a sister, Margaret Morton of Fayetteville; a brother, Robert of San Antonio; and three grandchildren.
