Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ross Harrison on June 3, 2007:

In honor of my father, I wrote the following poem. It was read as his memorial service:

My Father's Saber

There sits my father's saber up on the wall
Polished and well kept, but no longer used
Its time has long passed, but here it remains
A reminder of a sacrifice
A reminder of a man

In Flanders' Field my father lies
He shall twirl his sword and bang his shield no more
My father's time has passed.
Some say too soon, I say he lived more than any one man deserves.
He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend
It is time for him to rest, and it is well earned.

So up on that wall the saber will sit
It reminds me not to waste
Not to squander what I have been given
To take care of my loved ones
To hug and kiss my mother
To stand shoulder to shoulder with my brothers
And to carry on the spirit of the man
Whose name is on the saber up on the wall.
