Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom Claffey on June 29, 2007:

Sammy and I were roommates firstie year. He was Brigade S-3 and I was Brigade S-4. A terrific guy from Palo Pinto, Texas. His mom was a delight and so proud of Sammy. I owned a guitar at West Point and that guitar didn't know what a "workout" was until it met Sammy. I can still see him to this day, cigarette in his mouth, smile on his face, banging away rock and roll tunes: "Good Golly Miss Molly," "Roll over Beethoven," "Blonde Bombshell," "Splish Splash, I was Takin' a Bath," and many more. We both bought new Chevrolets at graduation; mine was a white and turquoise coupe, Sammy's a dazzling black convertible! All four of us on Brigade Staff went Air Force: Bob Durkin, Brigade Commander, Reggie Seiler, S-1, Sammy and myself. Shortly before Bob Durkin died, we exchanged e-mails, wondering the cause of the aircraft accident which caused Sammy's death. So young. So sad. He lived his short life to the fullest. Well Done, Sammy ... Be Thou At Peace.
