Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Wes Hayes on June 20, 2002:

I had the honor of knowing and working with Colonel Dan Foldberg while I was a cadet at West Point, Class of 75. Colonel Foldberg served as the Regimental TAC Officer for 4th Regiment and also as our Class Advisor. As Class President, I worked closely with Colonel Foldberg for two years. He was by far the finest officer with whom I came in contact at USMA, perhaps the finest that I have known. He was always pleasant and encouraging. He never had to tell someone to do something - all he had to do was mention it and you wanted to do it. He was courageous, willing to stand up for his subordinates to the point of his on detriment - he stood up for our class on numerous occasions. As an All-American football player on one of the great Army Teams, his name was legendary not just among cadets and graduates, but for a whole generation of Americans. Yet, Colonel Foldberg was humble, and when you talked with him, you knew you had his full attention and what you said mattered to him. He was the kind of officer I would gladly follow anywhere. I have two sons, and I hope they someday have an opportunity to come in contact with a man like Colonel Foldberg. West Point can be proud to claim him as a son.
