Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steven Perryman on February 12, 2017:

Dick was my Beast roommate, so he was the first classmate I met at the very beginning. And what a great roommate to have. Low key, tough, and always looking after his roomies. He had arrived from Prep School and knew more about the Army then than I probably know now. At the time, that was particularly helpful, as I (literally) thought that the Ranger tabs I saw on officer uniforms had something to do with forests....

When academics started, I quickly learned the value of Dick's having gone through the Army's language school to become a Russian translator. While he drove the first section without cracking a book, most of the rest of us spent our study time the night before Russian class cramming Cyrillic words into our short term memory.

After graduation we had only fleeting contact at reunions until he started attending the Class ski trips. There I rediscovered a treasure and found a new one. I had no memory of having met Audrey before and found her to be a true delight -- a quality soul-mate for a quality classmate. The "rediscovery" of Dick was simply joyful. I had forgotten his low key humor and his through-and-through nature as a kind and thoughtful gentleman.

Now that we have lost him, I trust that everyone he touched will remember him with deep fondness and with the knowledge that the world is a better place for Dick having passed through it.
