I first met Monty several years ago when I visited him at his nursing home in Waynesboro, VA. While his short-term memory was impaired, Monty's memories of our days at West Point more than fifty years prior were crisp and clear. Oh, the stories he told! Monty was a football player and much of his cadet life revolved around football in particular and sports in general. Our class scribes were very good at creating periodic, well illustrated newsletters of classmates' activities and adventures. I shared them with Monty and he would remember interactions with many of our classmates. Recalling after hours and weekend shenanigans kept us both in stitches. I truly believe our visits were more uplifting for me than him! Monty was very grateful for the support he received from his family, particularly his sister Becky and friend Dana. While he lived in the past, he somehow knew he was cared for and loved.
