Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dan Christman on April 21, 2020:

One of the most cherished gifts I have received was a first edition copy of the Red Blaik autobiography, "You have to pay the Price," with a forward by Douglas MacArthur. John gave it to me a few years ago, and he included in his inscription the words, "Thank you for your friendship!" Everyone who knew JT acknowledged that thanking for a friendship went predominately the other way. John was the ultimate friend. He gave so much to each acquaintance.

And John was the ultimate leader. I was privileged to serve as his OR when he was the head coach of the plebe football team, '71 to '73. John was tough and demanding, but always fair and enormously inspirational.

The first page of the book John gave me included a stanza from an old poem, "Johnie Armstrong and his last good night." It ended with the words, "I will lay me down for to bleed a while, then I will rise and fight with you again." We will all rise again, Johnie, to fight with you, for all time.

Until we see you again. Rest in Peace, dear friend.
