I was fortunate to know Hal while cadets and later as Tactical Officers. When Hal & I were Regimental XO's in the Tactical Department, we were both promoted to LTC on the same day, April 1. Having a promotion ceremony on that date required us both to assure the Commandant's Office that we would not play any pranks. We didn't. At the time, Hal had a word game he liked to play. Each day he would select a word at random from a dictionary. He would then use that word in conversations during the day. Sometimes made for some unusual banter. Each Regiment had a large unabridged dictionary displayed on a lectern in the XO's office. Mine was older and had more words. Hal would not let me rest until we completed a property transfer between Regiments. Hal was a man to walk through life with as a friend, professional, and role model. In the good and difficult times, he kept a sense of humor and always faced problems with the desire to prevail. A good friend to all, he will be missed.
