Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Preston L. Forsythe on May 14, 2014:

Paul and I were Beast Barrack roommates the summer of 1965. He was my first roommate at West Point. Paul was from California and I was from a small town in Kentucky. We quickly learned we had to adapt and change from our civilian ways to the regimented cadet and soldier life, and not ask why. Our 25 hour days, it seemed, were filled with spit shining shoes and boots, memorizing the entire Bugle Notes, doing multiple uniform changes and running everyplace we went. Oh the pain of those leg cramps we each suffered at night. Eventually we were assigned to different companies, not far apart in the 4th Regiment.

Recently, I read about a cross-county bicycle trip Paul had planned with a group of classmates for the late summer of 2014. I wondered if I could do that, and hoped to join the group at one of their stops in Kentucky.

Rest in Peace Old Roommate.
