Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Alan Van Saun on February 7, 2006:

It is never easy to deal with the passing of a classmate, especially while being deployed in the same war that took him from us. But I am confident that Gary is now in a better place looking down on all of us.

Gary was one of the most genuine and caring people I ever encountered during my time at West Point and Ft. Benning. Never have I met such a selfless soldier who would go out of his way to help anyone. I first met Gary when he volunteered his time to help train me for Sapper School. After that we went through the Ft. Benning process together which is a time where the true side of a person really shows. During this time, Gary was always the man who could lift your spirits when you were down, would volunteer to carry the heaviest equipment and would make every sacrifice possible for the good of the group. And he never failed to amaze everyone with his creativity and innovations with uniform modifications and solving the most complex problems in the field.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Avery family and his wife. Although these words cannot take away the pain, rest assured that Gary left this world a little better than he found it and it was an honor to serve with him.
