I taught Matthew during his senior year at West Point, a class called Officership. He was not incredibly active in class and was more prone to deliberate and thoughtful contribution rather than more regular and superficial ones. When he did share his ideas in class, they were insightful and I think indicative of the type of officer his Soldiers could expect: disciplined and intelligent. As instructors, we do the best we can to steward the profession by preparing our Cadets for an uncertain, volatile, and dangerous future. In working with Cadets just like Matthew, it's hard to be anything other than deeply inspired by their desire to serve, especially in today's world. I'm saddened by Matthew's passing but am grateful to have met him and even briefly been part of his service to our nation. Well done, Matthew. Be thou at peace.
