Edward Roy Hindman

West Point, 1949

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Miss Susan Lee Hindman on November 20, 2006:

My father was one of the greatest Americans and also one of the very greatest graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, Class of 1949! He served his country well and was a very great Dad to me all his life! Dad ranked academically number 53 out of 574 graduates at West Point. My father also graduated from Princeton University Graduate School, Class of 1955, with a degree in Civil Engineering.

My Dad accepted our Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior toward the end of his earthly life. His greatest desire upon his passing into eternal life was to be reunited someday with his wife and my mother, Mrs. Sandrina N ("Sandy") Hindman, to whom he was married for 52 years, and with his son, Dr. Edward Roy Hindman, Jr., DDS, a dentist, and with me his daughter, Miss Susan Lee Hindman, a DoD civilian who works at the Pentagon for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counternarcotics, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, Office of the Secretary of Defense. Dad also has a granddaughter, Miss Chaney Calhoun Hindman, by his son and my brother Ed and his wife Mrs. Dorcas Hindman. Chaney is a graduate of George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, Class of 2006.

Dad was very loving and kind to me and provided very well for me all of his life. He taught me many things including his great love for fine classical music. I majored in Music, with an emphasis in the piano, and graduated from the University of Maryland in December 1979, due to my Dad's classical musical impressions upon me. I also was in the Fort Hunt High School Marching Band in the Flag Corps where my Dad many times came to our competitions and took photos in support of me.

Dad served his country very well and earned two Bronze Stars, one in Korea and one in Viet Nam, both for exceptional meritorious service as an Officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In retirement, Dad became the President of Edman Enterprises, Incorporated, a builder developer corporation. Dad built the Oakbrooke single family homes subdevelopment and the Briary Farm townhouse subdevelopment, both located in Mount Vernon, VA.

I miss Dad very much as a fine Dad and his cute humor, and know that my whole family as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ will someday be reunited with him in heaven! We are blessed now and yet to come eternally forevermore!!! Amen!!!

I wish you the very same blessings from the Lord for whoever reads this eulogy entry. I wish you every happiness, peace and joy, comfort and protection for your life!

My office and I survived the terrorist airplane crash on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. My old office was located 190 feet to the left of the impact of the American Airlines airplane. The window blew in that was next to my desk and the curtains started on fire. Thank God Almighty that I was just coming in to work on my usual late shift and was still in the ladies room just down the hallway putting on my contact lenses! I am extremely grateful to be alive today! Amen!!! My office was so badly damaged that it was demolished and had to be rebuilt. My office members and I were out of the Pentagon for one whole year in Crystal City and Rosslyn, which are sections of Arlington, VA. Only the power of the love of our Lord Jesus Christ and the spirit of true democracy will triumph over the forces of evil in this world. I am so very glad to be back in the Pentagon in a new office location now! When I called my Dad later that afternoon on September 11, 2001, he was so relieved to hear my voice after seeing on the news that the West side of the Pentagon was engulfed in black smoke and flames. Dad knew where I worked diagonally behind the Helipad because he came one day to my office to visit me when he was in the building, often for West Point monthly luncheons or to go to the Pentagon Pharmacy. Dad said to me on the telephone, "Susan, you've just seen war!" I had claimed Psalm 91 for the Lord's protection over my life and my family member's lives for many years. I am glad that I did!!! Amen!!!

I will never forget how peaceful and loving Dad was toward the last five years of his life. Dad had a very real and extremely dramatic conversion experience by accepting our Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior similar to the New Testament account of Paul the Apostle on the Damascus Road in Acts Chapters 9, 22 and 26!!! Dad took a fall and broke his hip, and was lame for over 4 years, and gradually began to see the Light. He finally came home to his heavenly Father Who had been waiting so patiently for him just like the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. Dad genuinely repented of all of his sins!!! The Lord showed me a vision of Dad on December 23, 2001 after he had hip replacement surgery, and I heard the Lord's voice speaking about my Dad, "He will be with me"! I hung on to this promise and the Word until I saw my Dad saved! "Rejoice greatly" is what the Lord told me upon Dad's passing on September 12, 2005!!! I will see him again! Hallelujah and all the praise and glory and honor goes to our Lord Jesus Christ forevermore!!!

The words of our Lord Jesus Christ in John 14:6 says "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes to the Father but by Me."

Romans 10:9-10 says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

II Timothy 2:1-4 says, "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life: that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."

I thank God for Jesus Christ! I hope that you also were my Dad's friend! I was my Dad's very best friend and I will see him again in heaven alive forevermore!!! Praise the Lord!!! Amen and Amen!!!

Love in our Lord Jesus Christ,
Miss Susan Lee Hindman
