Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Lindsey on October 3, 2004:

Being in the next door company to Charlie?s. (H-1) I got know him pretty well plebe year. I am almost sure he was in that 15 to 20 cadet group from G-1 that occupied the top of H-1? s 31st Division. (some room mate can verify hopefully..memories slip)..Charlie had to move out 5 minutes early to make it to the G-1 formations in Central Area? What a chore in addition to the others that the upperclass could invent. But that did not phase Charlie or his "up-spiritedness." Plebe year while never easy, seemed to be to him !!

Charley was an outstanding Chess player, and at the Infantry Advance Course, 1962 -1963, he and Ann would have me over for food, and drinks and to play Chess. I have never been very good, but Charlie must have been of world class caliber, even in those early days. In Chess (as in his Army Career, and other endeavors,) he was able to see far ahead and adjust accordingly. I never beat him and don?t think many others did. I wonder how he finally did in the Chess world-- online ? live ? championships ? Has he taken on the Ultimate Grand Master and given the appropriate drubbing? ( or like he did with me, let him win a few ) He could do it! Such a positive attitude, and always with a keen sense of humor.

At that time at Fort Benning, he was having a serious bout of Tuberculosis and had to take daily ( hourly ?) meds. He let me taste his foul medicine ( most bitter thing I ever tasted.....)....The sort of thing that would make the coming days events less than fulfilling. Only Charlie could make such a positive thing of that regimen.

The only other time Mary Ann and I saw Ann and Charlie was in DC, 1972. Mary Ann still remembers his greeting..?Bob Lindsey, the only guy that can do a one and half off the high board, speak French and German , and play Chopin Ballads on the piano.? It always impressed me that he remembered that kind of minutiae after such a long time, but I?ve got a hunch he had that same data in his head for most people he cared about.

"In life, the important thing is whether to conjugate the verb to have or to be....."
Franz Liszt 1880

Charlie was the epitome of the "to BE er s "

We?ll miss you Charlie Press on
