Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Glenn Wells on February 1, 1999:

I was privileged to be a classmate of Alex's in the 9th grade in Hanau, Germany, and the 10th grade at Frankfurt. It was clear then that his intelligence, leadership, and sense of honor would produce a remarkable man. I lost contact with him when my dad's unit rotated back to the States in the spring of 1958.

While browsing through a West Point alumni directory a few years ago I happened to find his entry and discovered that he had died in Nam. About a year later I read a short piece in Time magazine about the cemetery at the Academy and Alex's last letter home. Even though it's been over forty years since I spoke to Alex, I miss him. We need leaders like him now, and there aren't many.
