Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gary Cecchine on April 30, 2003:

Bill Miller reported in to the W P Department of Engineering as a new instructor in the summer of 1970. Col Shilling was surprised to see a captain as all his previous instructors were field grade officers. I reported in January 1971 - another captain; Bill had convinced him by then that company grade officers could definitely do the job. I remember it was very easy to find our hats. In 1972 Bill became the president of the West Point Fishing Club. I became the secretary and Larry Bramlette the treasurer. It had been a sleepy club that owned 30+ old wooden row boats. But it had $10,000 in the checking account! We sold the old boats and replaced them with new aluminum ones. We also spent some money on stocking 5# trout in Bull Pond. Bill also settled a trout stocking dispute between state and federal agencies who were unsure of jurisdiction by convincing both to stock. We put 8000 trout in Bull Pond, Round Pond, and Lusk Reservoir that year. The size of the fishing club more than doubled. Iremember may pleasant days fishing with Bill.
