Leonard Douglas Davis

West Point, 1965

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Kuhn on May 26, 2009:

Doug and I were members of the track team at West Point all four years. Neither of us was gifted with exceptional speed or talent, but we were determined to first make the team and second to make a contribution. I think Doug was the hardest working member on the team. He ended up running the hurdles while I gravitated to the jumping events and javelin. I am proud to say we both found a way to end up scoring points in almost every meet we were in. During those four years, Army beat Navy in indoor and outdoor track seven out of eight times despite being underdogs each time. Doug could always be counted on to do his part and was there to cheer on every other team member from the hammer throw to the two mile. He was the penultimate team player. He perfected his hurdling technique to the point of being so smooth going over the hurdles that he earned the nickname of "The EEL." Those of us who had the pleasure of having Doug as a friend and a teammate will never forget his grit and determination.
