Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kristina Gibson O'Neil on December 1, 2021:

God, family and Country were the core beliefs that drove our Dad throughout his life. He was a strong believer in Christ, a loving and hardworking family man and a passionate Patriot to our country. Many who think back will remember how hard he worked, first to get into West Point Military Academy, then to graduate top of his class, later to work and enjoy his military and civilian engineering career, all while providing and loving his growing family. Dad used to tell us about the time he was working at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was asked to be the bodyguard for Michael Collins, the American astronaut who flew the Apollo 11 command module Columbia around the Moon in 1969. While in the military Dad was able to experience different countries and cultures including the Dominican Republic, Argentina and finally Vietnam where he spent a year "in Country". Dad was so grateful to have been blessed with his survival that he wanted to give back to others, he did this through his work as an EMT in New Providence, NJ. Dad had a very successful career working as an Engineer for many large companies, including Proctor and Gamble and Boston Whaler. Later he went on to enjoy Maine while owning and running Alamoosook Lodge, a sought after wedding and vacation destination. Finally, Dad came full circle and returned to New York and Connecticut where he was able to slow down and enjoy his life, including spending time with Diane, taking a Government class with friends, watching the Yankees and the Jets, walking his dog and reading. We will miss our Dad's deep laughter and every time we smell pipe smoke or taste coffee ice cream we will think lovingly of him.

Godspeed Dad. I love you.
