Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William Birdseye on November 11, 2021:

Well Step, so you don't want any to-do, any fuss, any remembrance from anyone who may still be around, but sometimes, well, a beloved yearling roomy who affected a jaded attitude that was regularly pushed aside by an irrepressible zest for life can be kinda hard to let fade away without saying something about the salad days when you and I reveled in bandying words just for the fun of it, comparing our Army brat experiences before West Point, remarking on the absurdities of passing "serious" events that never amounted to existential matters, joyfully relaxing as yearlings after surviving a challenging (politely said) plebe year to become the first occupants of a fine, new second floor room in the northeast corner of then New South Area's west barracks (now Sherman Barracks), directly above the end of the ramp back to then Old South and Central Areas (now Grant and Bradley Barracks areas) where the Hell Cats stood directly under our floor and on our first morning there literally bolted us out of bed with the first bass drum BOOM of reveille! I yet salute those unknown bandsmen who never reported cadets dumping waste cans of water from the room windows above in the forlorn hope of driving the music elsewhere. Cow year company reassignments and graduation set us on increasingly different paths and diminishing contact, but the fondest memories abide. Duty, Honor, Country. No better values, no greater life Well Done. Rest in God's hand, Step, and for certain save me a seat in Fiddler's Green!
