James Ewell Echols

West Point, 1965

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Butch Langford on June 27, 2012:

I went to high school with Jim Echols. We were both guards on the football team. He was a good friend and a great guy. He was also a good football player. I went into the Marine Corps in 1959. Jimmy later went to West Point. We both went to Vietnam. I retired from the Marine Corps in 1979. After that, I tried to locate old friends but found out Jimmy was deceased. I assumed for many years that he didn't make it back from Vietnam, but his name was not listed with the Vietnam Memorial. On Memorial Day this year I began thinking about him again and did an online search and learned of his death in Alaska in 1970. That really bothered me. I then read what he had written in my High School Year Book and it seemed like yesterday again. I just wanted to salute Jimmy and tell his family how great he was. It has been 42 years since his death but I cried today. Semper Fi, Jimmy.
