Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sam Williamson on December 17, 2008:

Allen came from my wife's home town, Minden, Louisiana, and I taught him when I was a first lieutenant in the Department of Social Sciences; his wife, Nancy, stayed with us in Highland Falls when she came to visit and for graduation in June 1966. Allen came to see our son, when he was born in the West Point hospital in December 1964, and introduced us to pizza, Italian style, when he came out to visit. A diligent student who worked hard, he did not find the academic side of West Point easy. But we were all thrilled with his graduation.

We continued to correspond and during his tour in Vietnam he and I exchanged many letters when he was there and I an assistant professor at Harvard. I went to his funeral in New York state in late May 1969 and have been grieving ever since. His death was like losing an younger brother.
