Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Stephen Tryon on June 8, 2005:

I came to this page today for the first time, and saw Amy's request for information about her Dad.

Amy,

I knew your Dad pretty well at West Point. He was a terrific person - smart, funny, generous and well-loved by all. I met him at Camp Buckner during our yearling summer. That was the summer after our first (plebe) year at West Point, and we went through a lot of training to teach us about what Soldiers do in all the different parts of the Army. We were organized alphabetically, so Barry and I were in the same platoon and shared the same metal barracks building. After that summer, we were randomly reassigned to companies for the rest of our time at West Point. Your Dad and I were both assigned to Company C-3. We were roommates during that first semester in C-3.

Barry was a wonderful person. He was a natural leader. People wanted to hang out with him. He was incredibly funny, and kept all of us laughing at ourselves and at some of the stuff we went through as cadets. This will sound silly in an age of CDs and digital downloads, but he regularly let me use his extensive collection of records, and his stereo - both precious commodities at the time.

After that semester, we each moved off to new rooms and interests. We still attended company and class meetings together, and occasionally shared a table in the mess hall for meals. Barry remained a wonderful friend and classmate - someone we could all count on for a laugh; a helping hand; and a dry, common-sense read on the latest change in regulations or academy policy. He was someone we all admired.
