Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Olsen on May 6, 2007:

Seldom a week goes by that I don't reflect on our time in Somalia with the 43rd Engineer Battalion. Brian was the signal officer and I was the headquarters company executive officer. Both of us were supposed to stay in the base camp and keep things working (me) and people talking (him).

I fondly remember when temptation got the best of us, and we went out on a "patrol." Boy, that pothole was big and I'm glad we didn't shut off the engine or it never would have restarted! I also remember how, after being beat by the NCOs at spades so many times, we realized everybody in camp cheated at the game except for us! I still remember our signals we then developed!

I will miss my battle-buddy and friend -- and will soldier on until I see you again on the high ground.
