Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Major Grant Goldsmith on December 9, 2009:

Dear Tom,
Sorry to take so long to post my words for you. I wrote to your family but I have not written to you.

It was with crushing sadness that Captain Orloff and I learned of your passing in 2007. Even now we are still coming to grips with this reality.

We remember you, Tom, and your service gives us both courage and strength to get up every day and stand up straight as those worthy of serving with you should. You challenge us to be better than we are and to remember who we are with - we are with you, Tom, and we will serve proudly in testament to you - our brother in arms.

We miss you, Tom. We think of you. I am going to the Army and Navy game in a few days and as I think of my classmates and The Corps I think of you too. We will have a drink to you, Tom, and remember your spirit and we know that one day, when we cross over, we will see you again.

Thanks for standing up for us, Tom, and for doing the hard things that were required of you. Thanks for taking care of your soldiers. Thanks for being a person of good character and a friend to your classmates both at USMAPS and at West Point.

When people ask me to describe myself I always end up describing those with whom I have had the privilege to serve. Who I am is Who I am with. We are with you, Tom, and we are better people and leaders for it.

Rest easy brother - we are all coming your way sooner then we think.

With Respect,
Major Grant Goldsmith and Captain Mike Orloff (TF Bravo)
