Mr. and Mrs. Runkle, My sincerest sympathies to you and your family on the loss of John. My family had the honor to meet John in Georgia right after his graduation from Ranger school. He was invited to a party we held for our son Dimitri del Castillo upon his graduation from Ranger school a class after John's graduation. Dimitri is also an USMA graduate of the Class of 2009. You know these guys stick together so they naturally invited John to attend. It was clear John demonstrated a quiet strength and maturity. He was well liked by all the Rangers in the room. He definitely enjoyed the stories shared by the recent Ranger grads. We wanted to share this moment with you so as to provide another moment in his experiences. Believe us when we tell you we share your emotions as our son is currently serving in Afghanistan as well. My son shared the news of John's passing with us and was saddened to know yet another 2009 classmate was lost in combat. From one set of parents to another, we thank you for his service. We hope you find solace in knowing that he was doing what he wanted to do.Our prayers are with you. Carlos and Catherine del Castillo |
