Be Thou At Peace
Posted by J. Greg Tharp on June 19, 2002:
Colonel Dan Foldberg was truly a great guy and a great leader. Prior to coming to West Point in the early 70's to join the Superintendent's staff, I believe he commanded the 3rd Regiment "Old Guard" at Fort Myers. As the 4th Regimental Tactical Officer while our class was the First Class, he led by motivation rather than intimidation. Extremely personable and uncommonly approachable, I do not know of a cadet in 4th Regiment who did not respect him. While on Regimental Staff (where Steve "Monty" Montgomery, now deceased, was the Cadet Regimental Commander), I was able to witness his leadership and how he protected the Regiment from some of the "fear" of the Commandant at the time. I believe the Army missed out when he did not pick up a star. After my graduation, I got to know him better when he was stationed with my father at the Fort Meade Recruiting Command. He and his first wife, Mary, were two of the kindest people you would ever meet and were the "operations officers" for my wedding at the Fort Meade chapel in January 76. Not more than a year or so ago, he lost his brother who was also a West Point alum and equally skilled on the football field. My parents and I, as well as my wife, extend our deepest sympathies to Colonel Foldberg's family. Be thou at peace, Colonel. Greg Tharp, Class of 75.
