Richard Allen Chilcoat

West Point, 1964

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by SCPO Paul Sayles, USN (Ret) on May 15, 2015:

I had the privilege serve under then LTC Chilcoat when he was the battalion commander of the then 3rd battalion, 6th Infantry in Berlin from 1979-80. I was in the medical platoon and had numerous contacts with him on operational matters. He was always approachable and considerate -giving me (an E-6) the same attention as the other, commissioned, members of his staff. I have served in both the Army and Navy and consider LTC Chilcoat one of the best commanders I had the opportunity to serve under. I later needed a letter of recommendation to a program and asked him to write one for me. He responded with enthusiasm and a very helpful letter.

I lost contact with him after 1981 but I was pleased that he had reached three stars and was a Commandant of the Army War College and afterwards the dean at the Bush School.

I regret his passing and, belatedly, pass on my condolences to his family.

May he be having fair winds and following seas at his new duty station.
