Garrison Charles Avery

West Point, 2004

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James A. Zanella on May 8, 2008:

Garrison is one of three lieutenants that I trained in IOBC that died on the field of battle. He was an outstanding leader and the Army sorely misses his presence. My lasting memory of him is selecting him to lead the night ambush during the culmination exercise. He made me proud in his demonstrated leadership and tactical savy. As a trainer, it is hard to accept those you train getting killed when you survive. I ask myself what did I not teach him that would have made a difference. At the very least, Garrison, I was able to bring all 178 Soldiers in my company home from East Baghdad this last deployment. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten,
CPT Z
