Be Thou At Peace

Posted by FHP/FHOG on February 16, 2006:

Two weeks ago we lost our best friend. Gary was a friend to so many, and at first we didn't know how we could carry on without him. But the more we have let this settle in, we should celebrate his life and feel more sadness for those that never had the privilege to meet him.

What an amazing individual. Gary was always the quiet guy of the group, but he was definitely never without a friend nearby. Everyone wanted to get to know him because they knew he had so much to offer, all you had to do was ask. He was always willing to give advice, whether it was how to prepare for a marathon, how to tackle a tough situation, or how to make a canteen out of 100 MpH Tape. And his advice was always right on the money.

Gary was humble but confident. Caring, but a true warrior dedicated to being competent at every task at hand. He was there for us through the good times and bad. Not afraid of a man twice his size, or incapable of hog-tying that enormous man in order to keep him off the back of his best friend.

We'll never forget all those fix-it jobs that earned him the label of MacGyver. We'll never forget the weekend he met and fell head over heels in love with Kayla, or how he talked with so much excitement about their future together. We'll never forget his determined hand gestures when he was deep in conversation. His legend will carry on forever.

Now we can't help but wonder why Gary was taken from this world at a time when he had so many more opportunities left in front of him. Perhaps we'll never fully understand why. But we can rest assured that The Man Upstairs has a brilliant soldier to help lead His Army. And we have the best Guardian Angel we could ever hope for watching over all of us.

The loss of Garrison Avery has been devastating, but he will live on in all of us and drive us forward with stronger hearts and minds, so that we can continue his mission of making this world a better place than he found it.

Well Done. Be thou at Peace Gary, we'll see you on the other side buddy.
