Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Anonymous Cadet on April 24, 2001:

Tonight the corps held a taps vigil in John's honor. It was truly amazing, as we all stood completely silent in the darkness in our dress gray uniform and listened as taps played, followed by "amazing grace". I was in one of his classes first semester, and although I did not know him very well I can only remember his constant smile. Tonight after amazing grace was played we could hear the train pass down by the river, and the horn sounded twice. That was a special moment for all of us here who knew John.

The most amazing moment of all was when we sang the West Point alma mater..."And when our work is done, our course on earth is run, may it be said, 'well done;' be thou at peace. E'er may that line of gray increase from day to day. Live, serve, and die we pray, West Point, for thee."

John had an enormous impact on the corps, and as we finish this week I want to offer my condolances to his family and friends.
